Sports Medicine

"Sports medicine" refers to the integrated treatments - "modalities" in medical lingo - that foster quick recovery following damage to bones, muscles and joints. Sports medicine arose from the athlete's need to come back from injury strong, and to come back fast. Its modalities include minimally invasive surgery (to repair damage) and aggressive rehabilitation (to restore range of motion).

Dr. Nowak's fellowship had him treating members of the National Football League. Now he applies his skills to student athletes, weekend warriors and injured workers.

Integrated Orthopaedics is pleased to announce their Center for Sports Medicine which, in addition to its surgeons, is staffed by two Sports Medicine Physicians – Joseph Bernard, D.O. and Mark Reeder, M.D.

Sports Medicine Physicians specialize in fitness and prevention of injury to maximize function and minimize disability and/or loss of time away from sports, work or school. Common examples of non-operative medical treatment of musculoskeletal problems include: ankle sprains, muscle strains, knee and shoulder injuries and fractures, overuse injuries such as tendonitis and stress fractures.

Drs. Bernard and Reeder practice in collaboration with Drs. Nowak, McGovern and Colman to coordinate the medical and, if necessary, surgical treatment of sports related injuries.

Sports Medicine is not exclusive to the athlete but also encompasses the “weekend warrior” or non-athletes who are seeking a more active lifestyle.
